You must use some form of “be” or linking verb to join subjects to their descriptions in English. You must also use “be” in passive voice verb phrases (be practiced).

Mary I haven’t slept in a week. Do you see all these invoices? They’re from last

week. We haven’t even started this week’s pile. We’re seriously backlogged.

Juan : I thought the turnaround time on those was 24 hours. Did the system crash?

Mary The system is fine. It’s the boss’s niece that crashed. We can’t process the checks until she signs the invoices, and she never signs them until she’s been

asked four times. She only reads emails from management.

Juan : It sounds like she has real issues.

Mary It’s the boss who has issues. Namely, nepotism.
