Su Laura Bassi è stato anche pubblicato recentemente il libro “Laura Bassi – The World’s First Woman Professor in Natural Philosophy – An Iconic Physicist in Enlightenment Italy“, a cura di Luisa Cifarelli e Raffaella Simili.

International women’s day in science: dismantling gender stereotypes

An annual International Day, February 11, was established by the United Nations starting in 2016 to recognize the fundamental role that women and girls play in the scientific and technological communities. As is well known, international days offer an opportunity to mobilize political will to tackle global problems. Among these are science and gender equality which certainly need to receive more attention and resources because they are both vital for sustainable development. Indeed, it is very important that we become increasingly aware that “the world needs science and science needs women” and there must be a serious commitment to eliminate long-standing prejudices and stereotypes that keep girls and women away from science related fields. To achieve these goals, there are efforts to make concrete contributions at different levels, making available all possible tools and implementing specific actions.

The “societies” for the promotion of culture, such as SIF, are seriously involved in initiatives concerning “women and science” which focus in particular on making the public aware of the contribution of women scientists and of the current needs and problems in this context.

SIF has a very active Equal Opportunities Committee (CPO), chaired by Sara Pirrone, member of the SIF council, that has devised and promoted specific and impactful actions at national level. The CPO of SIF also collaborates with international committees and takes part in actions sponsored by the Ministry of Equal Opportunities.

In reminding you here some of the activities of our CPO, I would like to focus on two recent initiatives that SIF is very proud to have carried out. The first concerns our last national congress which took place using an electronic platform that made available the virtual rooms in which the different parallel sections were held. These seven virtual rooms were dedicated to seven female scientists; in preparing their biographies for our web page we realized that in the past, unfortunately, these scientists did not always have the visibility they deserved.

The second important initiative was to promote a new annual award dedicated to Laura Bassi that the SIF council recently approved with strong support and decided to award starting from this year. A book on Laura Bassi was recently published, “Laura Bassi – The World’s First Woman Professor in Natural Philosophy – An Iconic Physicist in Enlightenment Italy“, edited by Luisa Cifarelli and Raffaella Simili. In Italy and moreover beyond it, especially for the Anglo-Saxon world, this pioneer female scientist represents an emblem and a primacy in the period of the Enlightenment. By giving the well-deserved prominence to persons such as Laura Bassi and highlighting their legacy, the book has not only a strong historical value but it also helps to encourage the future generations of scientists, to indicate models, to enhance female knowledge and skills.

Coming to my concluding remarks, I would like to recall the attention that SIF has for young people and in this context it is important for us to collaborate with AISF (Italian Association of Physics Students) which currently has as its president the student Federica De Domenico of the University of Pavia, who personally experiences the existing problems of young female students. It was jointly decided that, also in 2021, there will be a section organized by AISF in the SIF congress on 2021.

How to conclude if not making the promise to give our effective contribution to put an end to the gender imbalance in science: I remind you that this is due in particular to the new generations!
